Motor Control Strategy

Engineering | Full-Time | Pune

About the Role

Bajaj Auto Technology is looking for an Engineer with hands-on expertise in motor control algorithm design and embedded implementation for EV traction applications. In this role, you will be responsible for developing, validating, and refining advanced motor control algorithms — from concept through deployment on real hardware. You will work closely with the lead engineering team to deliver robust, performance-optimised control software for PMSM/BLDC/SynRM-based EV drivetrains, while contributing to continuous improvement of our development methodology and toolchain.

Key Responsibilities

Algorithm Design & Development:

  • Design and develop motor control algorithms (FOC, MTPA, Field Weakening, torque/speed control) for motors used in EV traction applications.
  • Build model-based control algorithm designs using MATLAB/Simulink (or equivalent) with emphasis on simulation fidelity and traceability.
  • Develop and validate observer/estimator algorithms (e.g., flux observers, position sensorless algorithms) and tune dynamic behaviour for target drive cycles.
  • Implement thermal management strategies and derating logic to ensure safe operation across the full operating envelope.

Embedded Implementation & Validation:

  • Implement control algorithms on microcontroller platforms using embedded C & own the full cycle from model to embedded code.
  • Conduct Vehicle and motor dynamometer testing to verify and validate algorithm performance against specifications.
  • Perform systematic calibration and parameter tuning to optimise dynamic response, efficiency, and NVH characteristics.
  • Debug, profile, and optimise embedded code for timing constraints, memory footprint, and execution determinism.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement:

  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams (hardware, system engineering, vehicle integration, etc.) to align motor control deliverables with system-level requirements.
  • Benchmark algorithm performance against industry standards; identify gaps and propose actionable improvement initiatives.
  • Stay current with developments in motor control, power electronics, and EV technology; bring relevant insights and innovation ideas to the team.

Required Competencies

Technical / Functional:

  • Proven hands-on experience with FOC algorithm design including current control loop tuning, MTPA trajectory generation, and field weakening control.
  • Proficiency in model-based design environments: MATLAB, Simulink, Stateflow and auto-code generation workflows (Embedded Coder, TargetLink, or equivalent).
  • Working knowledge of C/C++ programming for embedded targets; ability to read, write, and review production-quality embedded code.
  • Experience with DSP/microcontroller-based motor drive platforms; familiarity with ADC, PWM, encoder/resolver interfaces.
  • Familiarity with automotive architecture, product development stages and MCU architecture.
  • Knowledge of automotive product development processes and role of motor control integration within an EV development.

Behavioural:

  • Strong ownership mindset — delivers commitments reliably and escalates risks early.
  • Structured analytical approach to root-cause analysis and problem-solving under time pressure.
  • Effective communicator; able to present technical findings clearly to both peers and stakeholders.
  • Self-driven learner with an appetite to master new tools, methods, and domain knowledge independently.
