Job Description: Medical Officer (Industrial Dispensary)

Location: Industrial Dispensary / Occupational Health Centre (OHC)

Regulatory Framework: Factories Act, 1948

Required Qualification: MBBS + AFIH (Associate Fellow of Industrial Health)

1. Job Purpose

To oversee and manage the health, safety, and medical needs of employees in the factory by providing clinical care, conducting statutory medical examinations, and ensuring full compliance with the Factories Act, 1948.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Occupational Health Care

• Conduct pre‑employment and periodic medical examinations as per occupational risks and statutory requirements.

• Implement and maintain health surveillance programs for employees exposed to hazardous substances.

• Perform mandatory medical examinations for hazardous process workers before employment and every 6 months.

B. Emergency & First Aid Management

• Provide emergency care for injuries, incidents, or acute conditions inside the factory.

• Maintain and supervise first‑aid facilities and emergency response readiness.

C. Statutory Compliance

• Ensure adherence to all medical and occupational health‑related provisions under the Factories Act, 1948.

• Maintain statutory forms and records (Form 7/32 etc.) as per factory rules.

• Comply with staffing requirements for Factory Medical Officers based on factory strength.

D. Preventive Health & Wellness Programs

• Conduct employee health awareness programs on hygiene, ergonomics, lifestyle diseases, mental health.

• Participate in workplace risk assessments (HIRA, HAZOP).

E. Medical Records & Reporting

• Maintain accurate and confidential medical records (EHR or physical).

• Prepare and submit statutory medical reports as required.

F. Coordination & Administration

• Coordinate with external hospitals for referrals and emergency backup.

• Supervise OHC staff (nurse, dresser/compounder, ward assistant).

• Ensure sufficient stock of medicines, PPE, vaccines, and equipment.

3. Educational Qualification

• MBBS from an NMC-recognized institution.

• AFIH certification (Associate Fellow of Industrial Health) – mandatory for Factory Medical Officer roles.

• Permanent/valid medical registration with State Medical Council or NMC.

4. Experience Requirement

Minimum 3 years post‑internship experience in hospital or industrial settings.

5. Skills & Competencies

• Strong clinical diagnosis and emergency management skills.

• Knowledge of occupational diseases, industrial hygiene, and toxicology.

• Understanding of Factory Act health & safety requirements.

• Good communication, reporting, and documentation skills.
